The memex was a hypothetical device proposed by Vannevar Bush in a July 1945 article for the Atlantic, “As We May Think.”1
I chose this name for a website because the kind of connection proposed by Bush isn't just about the path you follow from text to text, but the intellectual intention of “binding” the texts because you feel there is a meaningful connection. The act of citation, in my opinion, is the most effective way of carrying out that "binding." Which, in fairness websites, is easier when you can create URLs and link writing together.
